I think the length of a domain does make a difference. If someone mentions a website to a friend in passing then they are more likely to remember a short, easily memorized phrase than a longer one. If you go on Alexa's top 500 sites list, most of the big sites are around 10 characters or under: google, amazon, wikipedia, myspace, facebook, flickr, mininova etc.
